Q 1 Assignment Title: Current Events Overview of the Assignment: During this semester, you will share two (2) current news items/events related to diversity, oppression, specific populations, and cultural competence. This assignment will allow you to identify current issues in your community and implications for social work practice and provide you with the opportunity to practice your engagement and assessment skills, while simultaneously providing you with an opportunity to identify skills that will be personally needed for your own culturally responsive social work practice. You will provide a one-page written summary of the event chosen and you will also post your event to the discussion board of the week presented. Current Events Part I: Due Week 3 Current Events Part II: Due Week 9 Directions of the Assignment: 1. Students will submit a one to two-page written summary, including the url link of the article that was summarized. (5 points each paper– see rubric) a. In the written summary, include your reactions/responses to the article. Include information such as: i. Summary of the current news event. ii. What are the implications for social work practice? Apply/cite course concepts. iii. What skills would you use as a culturally responsive social worker? iv. What are the implications for social work practice? Apply/cite course concepts v. Is your community vulnerable to this event? b. Include the url link to the article within the written summary. c. Paper Requirements: i. This paper should be 1-2 pages in length, not including the title page or reference page, typed and double-spaced in an APA-approved 12-pt font. ii. The paper should be in an APA format (7th edition). iii. The paper should be written in a professional manner with proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and organization. Please avoid using colloquial phrases and consult the writing center if you need additional assistance.
